В статье представлены результаты дискурсивного анализа первых реакций британских и американских СМИ на заявление президента Д. Трампа о намерении управлять Венесуэлой (run Venezuela / run the country) после американских ударов по этому государству в начале января 2026 г. Актуальность статьи определяется необходимостью изучения закономерностей возникновения контекстуальных значений слов в медийном дискурсе и их зависимости от конкретного события.
Цель исследования: продемонстрировать на новом языковом материале роль современных масс-медиа в образовании у слов контекстуальных значений. Для достижения поставленной цели в статье решаются две основные задачи: показано, как интерпретации разными новостными изданиями устойчивого словосочетания run a country в контексте событий в Венесуэле способствовали расширению его смыслового поля; во-вторых, установлено, что доминирующими являются значения, связанные с изменениями в сфере государственного управления и военного присутствия.
Методы: контекстуальный, лингвосемантический и дискурсивный анализ, позволяющие установить роль контекста в смыслоформировании и образовании у выражения run a country окказиональных значений.
Результаты: проведенный анализ показал, что в течение одного дня выражение run a country существенно расширило свое смысловое поле за счет новых контекстуальных значений, сформированных в англоязычном новостном дискурсе. Выявленные 34 языковые единицы распределены по группам, показано, что run a country интерпретировалось СМИ в первую очередь в контексте реорганизации государственно-политической власти и военного вмешательства.
Заключение: дискурс политиков активно интерпретируется масс-медиа, в результате такой дискурсивной интеракции образуются новые контекстуальные значения, которые могут начать тиражироваться и закрепляются в языке. Поскольку политическая риторика становится более агрессивной, популярные в недавнем прошлом исследования стратегий «мягкой силы» уступают место изучению языка «грубой силы».
The article analyses initial reactions of some British and American media resources to President Donald Trump's intention to “run Venezuela” (run the country) following the American airstrikes against that country early in January 2026.
Relevance: The study contributes to understanding how contextual word meanings emerge, and reveals correlation between new implications and concrete events.
The purpose of the study is to reveal the role of mass media in forming contextual word meanings, which is done on the basis of new empirical data. To achieve the main goal, the author addresses two objectives: firstly, con-
texts are analyzed to show that interpretations of the phrase "run a country" by different newspapers with regard to the events in Venezuela encourage new meanings; secondly, it is revealed that the dominant meanings are those associated with changes in the sphere of public administration and military action.
Methods: Contextual, linguo-semantic and discourse analysis are used to identify the role of context in meaning-making, causing the phrase "run a country" to develop new meanings.
Results: Analysis reveals that within one day, the expression "run a country" significantly expanded its semantic field due to new contextual meanings formed in English media discourse. The 34 identified linguistic units were categorized into groups, demonstrating that the word "run" was interpreted by the media primarily in the context of the reorganization of state and political power and military involvement.
Conclusion: It is concluded that political discourse is actively interpreted by the media, as a result of this discursive interaction, words and expressions acquire contextual meanings that are replicated and introduced in language. As political rhetorics becomes more aggressive, the recently popular studies of "soft power" strategies are giving way to the study of the language of "hard power."
